Lampholder Bases explained https://help.marginservices.co.uk/knowledge-base/lampholder-bases-explained/ Mon, 01 Jul 2024 15:50:42 +0000 https://help.marginservices.co.uk/?post_type=epkb_post_type_1&p=1328
Lampholders bases come in various different styles, if you are not sure what style you need then check out below for their explanations.

Table of Contents

10mm Entry lampholders are the more popular entry lampholder to fit on any 10mm fixing point, the lampholder as it comes should not be used for a hanging light fitting.

However, you can add a 10mm cord grip to enable you to hang this from a cable.

This lampholder entry is the same as the 10mm, but this has the 1/2" 24tpi entry thread, you will find these generally in older style light fittings.

Again the same applies, you cannot use this when hanging from a cable unless a cord grip is being used.

The 20mm lampholders are designed to be used with 20mm electrical conduit systems and will screw directly onto a threaded piece of galvanised conduit pipe.

The pendant style lampholder is one of the most popular lampholders we sell to pubs/restaurants and retro fitting in domestic dwellings, these have built in cord grips so perfect for creating stunning pendant style light fittings.

Batten lampholders are very popular with theatre companies for lighting around stages and Hollywood style mirrors. These lampholders have flat discs fixed to them, ideal for fixing the lampholder to a wall or ceiling.

Aligning a BC Unswitched Lampholder https://help.marginservices.co.uk/knowledge-base/aligning-a-bc-unswitched-lampholder/ Mon, 01 Jul 2024 14:30:47 +0000 https://help.marginservices.co.uk/?post_type=epkb_post_type_1&p=1244

After installing and wiring your lampholder you find it is not working, please check the quick signs of a blown light bulb etc.

If it’s not the light bulb, for example, please read the following help file about the alignment.

Some of the un-switched lampholders need to have the 3 parts lined up or the lamp will not work when connected. Please make sure these parts are aligned.

There are indents on the side of the 3 parts and these must all line up together.

When fitted, you can check like this. The 2 slots of the lampholder will be 180 deg. From the 2 pins. This is what you need to ensure the contact of the lamp makes contact to the lampholder.

Safer switched lampholder not working https://help.marginservices.co.uk/knowledge-base/safer-switched-lampholder-not-working/ Mon, 01 Jul 2024 14:07:37 +0000 https://help.marginservices.co.uk/?post_type=epkb_post_type_1&p=1220

The BC safer switched lampholder is very handy as it has a built-in safety feature meaning you cannot turn the lampholder on without a light bulb inserted.

There will be a red pin in between the 2 brass pins, this is the safety feature and the concept is that the light bulb will push that pin down to allow the push bar to slide across.

Below are some tips for if the push bar is not pushing over or just not lighting up.

Click on the title to expand the tip.

This is the more obvious solution however you may of realized by now that there MUST be a light bulb inserted for the push bar to push over.

If you have a light bulb installed then please carry out the following task.

Remove the light bulb and unplug the light from the mains.

Remove the shade ring (Smaller Ring) form the lampholder.

push down on top of the lampholder whilst tightening up the lock ring further.

This will push the skirt downwards and closer to the red pin, meaning that when you put the light bulb back in it should push the red pin down further.

This one may be solved via the solution above.

Another thing to try and this does catch a lot of people out but a known working light bulb.

You can either take a known working light bulb from another lamp or take the light bulb you have and try it in a known working light fitting such as a centre ceiling light.

Check the fuse in your plug top, if you are using an old plug Or if the light bulb had blown it will take the fuse out, if you have a spare 3amp fuse please try this.

If the above did not help then please do get in touch with us, and we will look at other possibilities.

Wiring the BC Push Wire Plastic Snap on Cap Lampholder https://help.marginservices.co.uk/knowledge-base/wiring-the-bc-push-wire-plastic-snap-on-cap-lampholder/ Fri, 28 Jun 2024 12:29:41 +0000 https://help.marginservices.co.uk/?post_type=epkb_post_type_1&p=1206

This guide is to show you how to wire and dress the cables inside the snap on cap lampholder.

This guide is showing the unswitched lampholder, the switched lampholder is very similar in design and will work the same way.

Before you start you will need to ensure that the tips of your cables are solid, this means either using a dab of solder or using a ferrule to ensure it’s a solid lump and not multi stranded.

This now finishes the installation of the lampholder, if you need to remove the lampholder for whatever reason then please keep reading.

Installing the 40mm BC 4 Part Lampholder https://help.marginservices.co.uk/knowledge-base/installing-the-40mm-bc-4-part-lampholder/ Fri, 28 Jun 2024 12:08:03 +0000 https://help.marginservices.co.uk/?post_type=epkb_post_type_1&p=1191

This quick guide here is to help to install our 40mm BC 4 part lampholder.

This item comes in 4 parts, however sometimes we do put 2 of the parts together, so may arrive in 3 pieces.

The locking barb is designed to prevent the lampholder from separating accidentally.

However, there may be a time when you need to gain access to the inside of the lampholder, if you do then please follow this guide below.

Here is an image of the location of the locking barb once installed, as you can see there is a metal tag that's bent outwards and is hiding the plastic ribs in the inside of the skirt.

You will need to grab a small screwdriver and bend it inwards to clear the plastic ribs.

Once you have removed the lampholder you will need to bend that metal tag back out so when you screw the skirt back on it engages the locking barb again.

A quick video on how to unlock the barb below.

Wiring An S.Lilley BC Switched Lampholder https://help.marginservices.co.uk/knowledge-base/wiring-an-s-lilley-bc-switched-lampholder/ Fri, 28 Jun 2024 10:32:06 +0000 https://help.marginservices.co.uk/?post_type=epkb_post_type_1&p=1137

There are a couple of different ways that manufacturers provide the earth terminal in lampholders.

S-Lilley which is a UK based manufacturer use an internal earth connection so there is no terminal seen on the outside of the lampholder.

The switched S Lilley lampholders provide 3 terminals on the inside in both their standard and safer switched lampholders. There is a thin metal bar that make the contact to the body of the lampholder from the earth terminal.
